European Open Science Agenda

Nikola Benin

Brussels has witnessed important developments in the area of open science over the last few months. The “Amsterdam Call for Action on Open Science” and the “European Cloud Initiative” (ECI) were both adopted. Among the priorities that these initiatives list are the transition to full open access models for scientific publications and new approaches towards the sharing of scientific data.

To that end, the Amsterdam Call for Action pleads for an alignment of policies at national and European level as well as new assessment, reward and evaluation systems. The ECI, which is based on the creation of a European Open Science Cloud and a European Data Infrastructure, supports the deployment of large-scale high-performing computing data and network infrastructures. Open access to data will become the default option in H2020 as of 2017. Several calls for proposals in “Research Infrastructures” support the ECI agenda.
